Milei's Sweeping Deregulation Plan Passes First Senate Hurdle

Reported 4 months ago

President Javier Milei's ambitious deregulation plan in Argentina has progressed as it passed the first Senate hurdle after facing weeks of stalemate in the opposition-controlled upper chamber. The bill, initially introduced in December and watered down before passing the lower house in April, has now advanced to a Senate floor vote after achieving consensus among committees. Milei, who had to negotiate with centrist lawmakers due to his party's limited Senate seats, aims to finalize the bill and sign a pact with governors. Amendments to sections on income taxes, tax amnesty, and deregulation measures were negotiated, and if approved on the floor, the bill will return to the lower house for final modifications before implementation.
