A scathing report by the Legislature's watchdog arm revealed that the Minnesota Department of Education's lax oversight and failure to act on warning signs allowed for the theft of $250 million in a federal food aid program meant for children during the pandemic. The report criticized the department for not holding Feeding Our Future accountable, leading to 70 individuals being charged in one of the country's largest pandemic aid fraud cases, with only about $50 million recovered so far. The fraud involved producing fake invoices, shell companies, money laundering, and kickbacks, exploiting lenient rules put in place to prevent an economic crash during the pandemic.
