A recent city audit revealed that the gunfire detection system used by the New York Police Department leads officers to respond to noise that does not end up being confirmed shootings 87% of the time. Comptroller Brad Lander criticized the system, which has cost over $45 million since 2014, for wasting time and money. Recommendations were made to reevaluate the technology and the contract with SoundThinking, the company behind ShotSpotter. Despite the audit, the NYPD defended the system as a valuable crime deterrent and disputed the accuracy of the report.
