Sarah Tov, a pregnant University of Washington student, welcomed twin babies prematurely and then successfully defended her dissertation to complete her Ph.D. in special education and disability studies. The babies, born at Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Birth Center and spending four weeks in the NICU, were honored with their own graduation ceremonies. The facility's staff supported the LGBTQ+ couple, providing postpartum rooms to stay with their babies. Sarah's advisor held a mini graduation at the hospital, and a surprise ceremony was organized by the staff. The twins were even celebrated with their own graduation when discharged in June.
