On June 20, 2024, a woman named Qiu was sentenced to 2 years and 10 months in prison for mistreating her infant son, causing him to suffer from injuries including skull fracture, bleeding in the brain, brain atrophy, leading to epilepsy and hydrocephalus. Qiu took out her frustration from a strained relationship with her mother-in-law on her newborn son, physically abusing and dropping him. Despite appealing the sentence, the Supreme Court upheld the verdict due to the severity of the crime. Qiu cited financial difficulties, mental stress, and lack of postpartum depression diagnosis as contributing factors to her actions.
