A woman surnamed Guo, diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), developed suicidal thoughts due to her condition. She suffocated her 2-year-old daughter with a pillow and then attempted suicide when her husband was attending a colleague's wedding. Guo survived and was charged with child murder by the Taipei prosecutor's office, with a request for a harsher sentence under the Child and Youth Welfare and Rights Protection Act. The case will be reviewed by lay judges. The tragic incident occurred as Guo couldn't bear the burden of her illness and feared passing it on to her child.
