A study from the University of Southern California suggests that Elon Musk's Starlink satellites could damage Earth's ozone layer, potentially leading to ozone depletion. The report, published in Geophysical Research Letters, warns that the satellites emit significant amounts of aluminum oxide gas into the atmosphere, which could harm the ozone layer crucial for protecting life on Earth from harmful UV radiation, impacting skin cancer and crop yields. The increase in satellite re-entries emitting aluminum oxides could significantly degrade the ozone layer. SpaceX's plan to launch more Starlink satellites, along with other companies, contributes to this issue, raising concerns about space debris and potential collisions.
