Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the silent spread of the flesh-eating bacteria 'Group A Streptococcus' has rapidly increased in Japan, surpassing 1100 cases this year, marking a record high. During the period from March to September, 5 pregnant women have died due to infection. Experts urge the public to continue wearing masks, washing hands, and practicing good hygiene habits to prevent further spread. The infection route for over 70% of pregnant women was found to be through the upper respiratory tract, and it is believed that the strict hygiene measures during the COVID-19 pandemic indirectly suppressed the transmission of the bacteria.
