On June 17, 2024, a 76-year-old man in Taipei had persistent pain and swelling in his right index finger nail, initially diagnosed with nail fungus and treated with partial improvement before further investigations revealed squamous cell carcinoma of the nail bed, leading to successful surgery without amputation. Dr. Yang Yatang from Cathay General Hospital's Dermatology Department highlighted that nail bed squamous cell carcinoma, though rare, requires early detection and treatment as it can mimic benign conditions like nail fungus or viral warts, emphasizing the importance of seeking medical attention for abnormal nail conditions or chronic non-healing wounds. Treatment mainly involves surgical excision, varying from local tumor removal to finger amputation in advanced stages.
