NASA has awarded SpaceX an $843 million contract to build a vehicle that will bring the International Space Station out of orbit when its operating lifespan ends in a few years. The ISS, launched in 1998, is expected to be deorbited by 2030. SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, will build the vehicle, but NASA will supervise the mission. Crews have been living on the space station since 2000, and the involved countries have pledged to operate it until 2030, except for Russia, committed until 2028.
