National Health Research Institutes and ASUS Jointly Create Taiwan's First Biomedical 'Supercomputer' to Make Policies More Grounded and Accelerate Clinical Applications

Minister of Health and Welfare, Shu-Ti Hui attended the event on June 20, 2024. As Taiwan is about to enter an ultra-aged society by 2025, to ensure that national policies and clinical applications are more grounded, the National Health Research Institutes (NHRI) and ASUS signed a letter of intent on June 21st to build Taiwan's first 'supercomputer' dedicated to biomedicine, with computational speed thousands of times faster than traditional CPUs. NHRI Director-General, Si-Tu Hui-Kang, emphasized the importance of public-private collaboration for improving public health, mentioning collaborations like the Cancer Research Alliance that collected data from 27 medical institutions on cancer patients over the past 30 years. This initiative aims to utilize scientific analysis for health policy development and clinical advancement without compromising individual privacy. Minister of Health and Welfare, Tai-Yuan Chiu, highlighted the global trend of precision medicine and the need for extensive medical information technology computation to establish personalized treatment strategies. The alliance between NHRI and ASUS aims to advance computational capabilities and medical resource integration to realize President Lai Ching-Te's goal of a 'Healthy Taiwan'.
