Reported 8 months ago

On June 20, 2024, a pillar at the famous Chion-in Temple in Kyoto, Japan, which is designated as a national treasure, was found vandalized with what appears to be the letters S and D carved into it. The Kyoto Higashiyama Police are investigating the incident for potential violation of cultural heritage protection laws. Chion-in Temple is the head temple of the Jodo-shu (Pure Land) sect of Buddhism's Chinzei branch and its Sanmon gate, built in 1621, is one of Japan's largest surviving wooden gates. The temple has installed sensors, closes the gates at night, and conducts regular patrols for security, but no suspicious individuals were found. The temple plans to enhance security measures by installing surveillance cameras and has reported the damage to the Cultural Affairs Agency to discuss repair methods.
