According to a report from the Ukrainian newspaper Kyiv Independent on July 2, 2024, three NATO member countries have launched a joint mine clearance operation in the Black Sea to remove drifting mines laid by Russia during the Ukraine-Russia war, aiming to open a safe passage and ensure navigation safety for surrounding countries. Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania, the three NATO countries, signed a memorandum of understanding in January and started clearing hundreds of Russian naval mines in the Black Sea, potentially enhancing maritime security and assisting Ukraine in exporting grains through this crucial trade route.
