On June 27, 2024, at 2:58 AM, the 32 member countries of the NATO organization elected Dutch Prime Minister Rutte as the next Secretary General. Rutte will take office on October 1 after the current Secretary General Stoltenberg's term ends. The U.S.-led NATO main member countries will finalize Rutte's appointment before the summit next month. Rutte, a veteran in politics who has been in power in the Netherlands for 14 years, announced his candidacy for NATO Secretary General after his ruling coalition collapsed last year. Upon taking office in October, Rutte will face the challenge of maintaining support for Ukraine's resistance against Russian aggression while avoiding direct NATO involvement in a war with Russia. Additionally, uncertainty exists regarding the future U.S. attitude towards NATO, with the possibility of former President Trump returning to the White House.
