In a recent ruling by Qiaotou District Court in Taiwan, a Navy sergeant surnamed Yang who attacked his commander with a hammer following a dispute over turning off lights was sentenced to 8 months in prison with a 2-year probation period after reaching a settlement and compensation agreement with the victim. The incident occurred at the Naval Recruit Training Center where Yang, angered by being asked to report in person for failing to turn off lights, assaulted the commander causing multiple injuries, including a head injury that required 9 stitches. The court took into account Yang's admission of guilt and compensation to the victim, who chose not to press charges, in issuing the sentence, which includes community service, education, and supervision during probation.
