According to Liberty Times, on June 25, 2024, at 9:55 pm, it was reported that some Taiwan Railways personnel accused the monitoring room of negligence for not reporting the mudslide covering the track, which allegedly caused the derailment accident of the new Taroko Express. The incident occurred when Train No. 229 of the new Taroko Express encountered a mudslide at the Qingshui Tunnel in Hualien on the 21st, resulting in the train derailing and 9 people injured. Before the incident, it was claimed that 19 minutes prior, the monitoring alert system captured the mud and debris covering the railway, but the duty officers in charge did not report it. Taiwan Railways clarified that the monitoring camera was intended for observing the water level of the Daqingshui River, not for monitoring falling rocks. The railway administration is conducting a detailed investigation into the incident to determine responsibilities, including examining rainfall records during the debris overflow on the bridge and whether the staff reviewed the surveillance footage. Taiwan Railways has also taken additional measures to monitor for potential debris flows in the area, emphasizing constant surveillance with cameras and water level sensors for prompt disaster prevention.
