The Biden administration is backing the construction of large-scale nuclear reactors to address industry risks associated with building power plants that can cost billions of dollars. This support was announced during a White House summit on domestic nuclear deployment, with an expert group being formed to assist in the buildout and prevent delays. The move comes as some utilities are considering building new reactors, aiming to meet climate and clean power goals set by the administration amidst closures of a dozen reactors since 2013 due to competition from cheaper natural gas and renewable energy sources. The goal is to achieve a carbon-free power sector by 2035 and a net-zero emissions economy by 2050.
