New Property Hoarding Tax 2.0 Implemented in July, Household Registration Required for Preferential Tax Rate on Owner-Occupied Homes

Reported 10 months ago

The new Property Hoarding Tax 2.0 will be implemented on July 1st this year, adding the requirement of 'completion of household registration' for owner-occupied homes including oneself, spouse, or direct relatives. In Hsinchu City, out of 207,053 homes subject to property tax, 165,555 are owner-occupied, with nearly 30% or around 50,000 homes not yet registered for household registration. Residents are advised to complete their household registration by March 24, 2025, to qualify for the owner-occupied home preferential tax rate of 1.2%. Failure to meet the deadline may result in being charged the non-owner-occupied home tax rate, ranging from 2.6% to 4.8%. The new law aims to encourage the release of vacant properties into the rental market to increase supply, offering more favorable tax rates for rented properties meeting local rental standards.
