New Puyuma Train Derails in Hualien, Rockslide in Hehuanshan Tunnel, Accumulated Rainfall Only 2.5 mm

Reported 11 months ago

On June 21, 2024, Taiwan Railway's Puyuma train No. 229 derailed in the Hehuanshan Tunnel due to a rockslide from the Daqingshui River. Despite the closest rain gauge station 'Hezhong' recording only 2.5 mm of rainfall from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., which did not reach warning levels, a rockslide still occurred. The incident left the train with the first car's fourth axle and the entire second car derailing, resulting in the train driver breaking his hand and eight passengers sustaining minor injuries. The rail company attributed the incident to a sudden rockslide caused by heavy rainfall, rather than falling rocks, as the weather monitoring did not indicate warning levels at the time.
