New Taipei City Council Speaker's Son Alleged to Instruct Cyberarmy to Smear During Election, Instructed to Post 1 Million Bail by Prosecutor

Reported 11 months ago

On June 18, 2024, New Taipei City Council Speaker Jiang Gen-huang's son, Jiang Xin-zhang, was summoned by the prosecutor on suspicion of violating the election law and was ordered to post 1 million bail. Last year, Jiang Xin-zhang, representing the Kuomintang Party, ran for the New Taipei City Xin-zhuang District legislator seat but lost to a Democratic Progressive Party legislator. He was accused of spreading false information during the campaign to impede his opponent's election. Following months of investigation, prosecutors initiated a second search operation and detained Jiang Xin-zhang and others involved. The case will proceed with charges related to the intent to prevent someone from being elected under the election law and defamation under the criminal code. Jiang Xin-zhang declined to comment and left the interrogation room early in the morning amidst media inquiries.
