At a press conference today, New Taipei City mayor Gao Hong-an responded to criticism from the families of the two firefighters who died in a fire at Qingkong Mall on May 26th, stating that internal reviews and disciplinary actions have been initiated by the fire department and city government. Mayor Gao clarified that investigations into the fire have been completed and handed over for further legal action, while efforts are being made to hold the responsible parties accountable. Earlier, the city government requested samples of fireproofing materials from the construction company but was refused, prompting a site visit with the supervisory authority to collect evidence for investigation. Mayor Gao emphasized that no blame-shifting or cover-ups are taking place, and that all findings will be transparently handled. Various officials and government agencies, including former Premier Lai Ching-te, have expressed condolences and support for the families of the fallen firefighters.
