A woman surnamed Hsu from New Taipei, overwhelmed by economic pressure and other factors, attempted suicide and suffocated her son. Despite an appeal in the second trial, the High Court maintained the initial 16-year sentence. Hsu, who suffered from severe depression and financial difficulties, made the tragic decision to take her own life and that of her 6-year-old son, but survived. The case, involving a divorced couple agreeing to alternate caring for their child, was handled by a Citizen Judges court where her defense emphasized the hardships she faced, while the prosecution argued against leniency citing a suicide note and the young age of the victim.
