New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a bill allowing parents to block their children from receiving social media content suggested by algorithms to limit addictive feeds. Children under 18 will see only posts from accounts they follow on apps like TikTok and Instagram, instead of algorithm-suggested content. The law requires mechanisms for verifying a user's age and parental consent, with a 180-day implementation period for social media companies. Tech trade group NetChoice criticized the legislation as unconstitutional, while other states are also considering regulations to protect children online.
