As the era of digital medical devices and cell therapy approaches, the National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA) is devising a platform for the approval and pricing of self-paid medical devices. NHIA Director-General Chih-Liang Shih mentioned the current lengthy and complex process for manufacturers to apply for self-paid medical devices at various city and county health bureaus. To speed up the process, NHIA is working on a unified platform for application submission, aiming to lessen the burden on applicants. Amid concerns, it was found that patients are more worried about the unknowns of diseases and surgeries rather than the cost of medical devices. With this in mind, efforts are being made by platforms like 'Hand in Surgery Education' to provide educational content regarding surgeries and medical devices, addressing the informational needs of patients and promoting informed decision-making.
