According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), traffic fatalities decreased by about 3% in the first quarter, with an estimated 8,650 fatalities compared to 8,935 in the same period last year. This marks the eighth consecutive quarterly decline in traffic fatalities, with the fatality rate dropping to 1.13 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled from 1.18 in the previous year. The NHTSA projects decreases in fatalities in 30 states and Puerto Rico, increases in 19 states and Washington D.C., and one state with no change.
