Nigerian military authorities have revoked the operating permit for a major uranium mine held by French company Orano, escalating tensions between the military junta and France. Niger, a leading uranium supplier, had supplied over a quarter of the EU's uranium in 2022. The junta, post-coup, vowed to review mining agreements and end Western ties, resulting in the withdrawal of troops. The Imouraren mine, with substantial reserves, was halted following the Fukushima disaster and faced permit revocation despite a market conducive to resuming operations. Orano, present in Niger for 50+ years, expressed disappointment and willingness to challenge the decision.
