Nine family members from three different states were infected with brain worms after consuming undercooked bear meat kebobs at a family gathering in South Dakota in 2022. The bear meat, harvested from northern Saskatchewan, was stored in a freezer for over a month before being prepared, leading to the infection despite freezing instructions to kill parasites. Trichinellosis, caused by the parasite trichinella, resulted in hospitalizations and treatment for some family members. The CDC recommends cooking wild game to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent such infections.
