Norfolk Southern has agreed to pay a $15 million fine as part of a federal settlement over a disastrous derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, last year. The railroad will also pay over $500 million to improve safety post-crash and address community health concerns, in addition to $235 million in cleanup costs and a $25 million health care fund. While some residents feel the settlement is inadequate given the company's profits, the EPA Administrator considers it historic and a step towards industry improvements. The settlement doesn't include criminal charges, and concerns remain about long-term health effects and rail safety reforms.
