In response to a severe fertilizer shortage in North Korea, leader Kim Jong-un has ordered citizens to collect their own fecal matter for use as fertilizer or pay a fine of 5000 North Korean Won (about 170 Taiwanese dollars) if they refuse. Each individual is required to collect 10kg of feces, a policy usually implemented in winter but now being enforced in summer, causing sanitation and odor issues. This move has left many impoverished North Koreans struggling to comply with the directive.
