On June 25, 2024, South Korean military announced that North Korea launched an unidentified ballistic missile towards the East Sea on the 26th, suspected to have failed as it exploded midair and debris fell outside of Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This marks North Korea's 8th such launch this year. South Korean military estimates North Korea was testing the performance of a hypersonic ballistic missile but failed. North Korea has been striving to develop hypersonic missiles to challenge US and South Korean air defense networks, with recent tests reported in January and April.
