On June 18, 2024, at 7:49 AM, a spokesperson from the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, Lee Seung-jun (phonetic), stated that the South Korean military closely monitors North Korean activities and cooperates with the United Nations Command to maintain a strong military readiness. Around 20 to 30 North Korean soldiers briefly crossed into South Korean territory, approximately 20 meters from the border, prompting immediate broadcast warnings and gunshot alerts from the South Korean soldiers, leading to the North Korean soldiers retreating. Due to overgrown vegetation and unclear markings in the non-military zone, incidents like these occur. South Korean military also noted that recent North Korean activities in the area have resulted in North Korean soldiers accidentally detonating their own landmines, causing casualties among them. South Korea believes that North Korea’s recent reinforcement of defense structures aims to strengthen control over soldiers and prevent defections to South Korea.
