On June 15, 2024, the Norwegian Air Force confirmed the reopening of the long-sealed mountain hangars at the Bodø Air Force Base in northern Norway, accommodating at least 2 F-35A fighter jets to strengthen wartime survivability. The base, with a rich history dating back to World War II and its role in NATO during the Cold War, has refurbished its underground fortresses to house advanced fighter jets like the F-35A, along with new logistics support equipment for enhanced operational capabilities. This initiative is part of Norway's long-term strategic plan to bolster its air defense capabilities and establish decentralized deployment facilities to ensure aircraft readiness during times of conflict.
