A nurse in Oregon, USA, who formerly worked in the ICU, was arrested for allegedly swapping out pain medication in medical drips with tap water. The nurse, Dani Marie Schofield, is accused of diverting fentanyl by replacing it with unsterilized tap water in drips for patients at the Asante Rogue Regional Hospital between 2022 and 2023. Following a seven-month investigation, Schofield was arrested on June 19 after 16 patients suffered severe infections and died as a result of the tampered drips. Although causal relationships were difficult to determine due to the patients' existing health conditions, Schofield was indicted on 44 counts of second-degree assault. This incident reflects a serious case of medication diversion and abuse in healthcare settings.
