New York supermarket chain Gristedes will pay a $400,000 civil fine and invest $13.5 million in repairs to resolve charges of excessive greenhouse gas emissions from its store refrigerators. The U.S. Department of Justice found Gristedes allowed 42,094 pounds of refrigerant leaks from 2019 to 2021, equivalent to driving a gas car 140 million miles. The supermarket ignored Environmental Protection Agency rules and must cut emissions by 73% from 2020 levels, make repairs, and reduce corporate leak rates in four years according to a consent decree signed by owner John Catsimatidis.
