NYPD seizes hundreds of vehicles in crackdown on illegal "ghost cars"

Reported 6 months ago

The NYPD has seized over 800 vehicles in the past three months in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies to combat the issue of "ghost cars" and reckless drivers in New York City. These operations resulted in 184 arrests, 6,082 summonses issued, and the identification of over $6.5 million in unpaid tolls, fines, and penalties associated with the vehicles. "Ghost cars" typically have fake or fraudulent license plates, aiding criminals in evading police. The crackdown, which also targets unlicensed drivers, involves using license plate readers at bridge crossings to identify offenders. One recent operation at the Whitestone Bridge led to the arrest of a driver who attempted to flee but crashed into a tow truck.
