NYT: Conditions for 2022 Peace Talks Highlighting Challenges in Ukraine-Russia War

Reported 8 months ago

During the Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland attended by leaders of nearly a hundred countries, The New York Times revealed a peace treaty draft allegedly discussed by Ukraine and Russia in the early stages of the war, highlighting the difficulties Ukraine faced then and now in achieving peace. The 17-page draft included Ukraine giving up NATO membership and military alliances, lifting sanctions against Russia, abolishing language and identity laws in Kyiv, and reducing Ukrainian armed forces; while Russia would allow Kyiv to join the EU and retain Crimea, with other occupied territories' status to be discussed in a future meeting between Ukrainian President Zelensky and Russian President Putin. The deal fell through as Ukraine hoped for security guarantees from countries like the US and UK post-negotiations, which Russia opposed, causing Ukraine to lose interest in further talks.
