US oil tycoon Harry Sargeant III has obtained a license to continue purchasing asphalt from Venezuela without violating US sanctions. Sargeant's company, Texas-based Global Oil Terminals, signed a contract with Venezuela's state-owned oil company in January to import asphalt for infrastructure projects in the US. The two-year waiver will allow Global Oil Terminals to keep importing asphalt, with other oil companies like Maurel & Prom and Repsol SA also receiving licenses to operate in Venezuela under sanctions. The US is using sanctions as leverage for fairer elections in Venezuela, with additional firms seeking similar waivers.
