Opposition Parties Plan to Invite President to Report to Legislative Yuan; Premier: Constitutional Institutions Should Be Cautious

Reported 8 months ago

The Public Television News website reported on June 25, 2024, that the exercise of legislative powers law will officially come into effect on the 26th. However, President Lai Ching-te has decided to request constitutional interpretations and temporary disposals. It is rumored that the Kuomintang and People First Party may use the interim period before the interpretation to invite the president to make a national report to the Legislative Yuan. Premier Su Tseng-chang emphasized the need for constitutional institutions to be cautious and decide when to request a constitutional interpretation at the earliest. The Control Yuan also expressed opposition to expanding parliamentary powers, announcing that they will request a constitutional interpretation after the bill takes effect, as using legislative amendments to achieve constitutional amendments violates the separation of powers. Secretary-General of the Control Yuan, Li Chun-yi, stated that Parliament transferring investigative powers from the Control Yuan, judiciary, and prosecutorial agencies to the Legislative Yuan through legislative amendments achieves the effect of constitutional amendments.
