Over 1000 Pilgrims Die in Extreme Heat During Hajj in Mecca

Reported 8 months ago

From June 15 to 18, over 1000 pilgrims have died during the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca due to extreme temperatures reaching almost 52°C. Many of the deceased were individuals who had not registered with Saudi Arabian authorities for the pilgrimage and thus were not allowed access to air-conditioned facilities. The total death toll from 10 countries has reached 1081, with Egypt reporting the highest number of deaths among unregistered pilgrims. The rising temperatures in Mecca have made the pilgrimage increasingly challenging, with authorities having to evict tens of thousands of unregistered pilgrims from the area. Saudi Arabia, where temperatures have been soaring, is taking steps to address the crisis and manage the situation.
