Over 70% of Adolescents Living Under the Shadow of 'Appearance Anxiety' on Social Media, Two Platforms with Most Serious Users Revealed

Reported about 1 year ago

In the age where every person has a smartphone, the influence of the internet on individuals is increasing and a recent survey by the Child Welfare League Foundation in Taiwan has found that over 70% of adolescents are dissatisfied with their appearance, with those using TikTok and Instagram showing more severe anxiety. Peer pressure and online influence were reported as the main causes of appearance anxiety among adolescents, with behaviors like focusing on fashion, skin care, losing weight, perming hair, and makeup being common among youngsters trying to improve their appearance. The survey highlighted how uploading photos on social media platforms plays a significant role in adolescents' appearance anxiety, with many using filters, editing imperfections, or not daring to upload at all due to concerns over a good appearance. The study urges more attention to be paid to the mental health issues of young people.
