Joro spiders, also known as Joro spider, are invading the eastern United States with their hand-sized bodies and bright blue, yellow, and sometimes red stripes. Originally from East Asia and named after the Japanese yokai 'Jorogumo,' these spiders are not dangerous and are shy. Despite being able to play dead for over an hour, they primarily prey on mosquitoes, cockroaches, wasps, and other insects, posing minimal harm to humans and pets. Researchers are uncertain about the impact of these invasive species on the US ecosystem but anticipate their northward expansion due to their cold resilience.
