About 300 Guna Indigenous families on Gardi Sugdub Island off Panama's Caribbean coast are preparing to voluntarily relocate to the mainland due to rising sea levels, becoming the first of 63 communities expected to move in the coming decades. The government has built new homes on the mainland for the families, with the shift prompted by climate change effects like increased sea levels and stronger storms. The move will cost about $12 million, and it's estimated that all coastal territories in Panama could lose about 2.01% to sea level rises by 2050.
