On July 1, 2024, an Air Europa flight from Spain to Uruguay, operating as flight UX045, experienced severe turbulence over the Atlantic, resulting in at least 30 injuries among passengers, with some sustaining head injuries and fractures. The incident led the Boeing 787-9 aircraft to make an emergency landing in Brazil. Videos show parts of the cabin roof damaged and a passenger being flung onto the cabin roof, requiring assistance to get down. Climate change is cited as a factor contributing to the increase in severe turbulence incidents during transatlantic flights in recent years.
