New York state's Department of Financial Services has fined PayPal $2 million for cybersecurity failures that led to the exposure of customers' Social Security numbers in late 2022. An investigation revealed that PayPal did not utilize qualified staff for key cybersecurity operations or provide adequate training, allowing cybercriminals to access sensitive customer information for about seven weeks. In response, PayPal has implemented stricter security measures, including multifactor authentication and forced password resets.
