On July 3, 2024, a Penghu-registered fishing boat, 'Da Jin Man 88', was suspected of fishing in waters outside Kinmen and was forcefully taken back to Quanzhou Weitou Port in mainland China by Chinese maritime police ships. A retired coast guard official expressed confusion as to why there was no cross-strait law enforcement cooperation, which could have resolved the situation more diplomatically. The boat may be detained for 30 to 60 days according to a new Chinese maritime police regulation. Despite the tense cross-strait relations, there have been previous instances of Taiwanese fishing boats being released back to Taiwan after paying fines, raising concerns about the current incident's potential impacts on the boat's owner.
