Penghu Fishing Boat Detained by Mainland China - DPP Caucus Hopes Political Confrontation Will Not Harm Fishermen

Reported 12 months ago

On July 3, 2024, the Penghu-registered fishing boat 'Da Jin Man 88' was detained by the Chinese coast guard. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Caucus emphasized the need for the fisheries department to communicate and coordinate with relevant agencies in China without resorting to deliberate political confrontation, to avoid harming the fishermen who make a living in the area. The incident involved the boat being forcibly inspected and detained by Chinese authorities in Kinmen waters. The DPP urged China to handle the situation pragmatically, ensure the prompt release of the boat and crew, and their safe return. The DPP Caucus expressed concern that recent tensions initiated by China in various regions including Kinmen do not bode well for long-term cross-strait relations.
