On July 4, 2024, the Penghu fishing boat 'Da Jin Man 88' was detained in Quanzhou for fishing during the fishing ban period, potentially facing investigation under mainland criminal law with a penalty of up to 3 years imprisonment or a fine of around NT$220,000. Penghu fishermen pointed out that while their boats were being arrested by mainland Chinese authorities, Chinese fishing boats continued to illegally fish, causing a near-zero catch and sparking complaints. The incident has caught the attention of the White House and State Department who are closely monitoring the situation and encouraging open dialogue for a resolution.
