Peru Earthquake with Magnitude 7.2 'Equivalent to 32 Atomic Bombs' - Warning Issued by Expert: Over 1,000 Days without Magnitude 8 Earthquake

Reported 12 months ago

Peru experienced a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 near the second-largest city, Arequipa, on June 29, 2024. Expert Guo Kaiwen warned that globally there have been only 4 earthquakes of magnitude 7 or higher this year, compared to the usual average of 15. Furthermore, it has been over 1,000 days since a magnitude 8 earthquake struck. The earthquake's impact was compared to that of 32 atomic bombs, making it the fourth earthquake with a magnitude of 7 or higher in 2024 since the Hualien earthquake on April 3. Guo Kaiwen highlighted the seismic activity at the boundary of the Nazca and South American plates, noting their history of strong earthquakes, including a record magnitude 9.5 quake in 1960.
