Peru Earthquake with the Power of '32 Atomic Bombs' Raises Alert for Magnitude 8 or Above, Expert Warns

Reported 12 months ago

A strong 7.2 earthquake hit Peru on June 28, marking the 4th earthquake with a magnitude of 7 or above globally this year. Expert Guo Kaiwen warned that the energy released by the 7.2 earthquake in Peru is equivalent to that of 32 atomic bombs, emphasizing the need to be cautious of earthquakes with a magnitude of 8 or higher. The earthquake was caused by the Nazca Plate subducting beneath the South America Plate along the Peru-Chile Trench. Guo Kaiwen pointed out that the area where the earthquake occurred has experienced 20 earthquakes with a magnitude of 8 or higher since 1900, with the 1960 earthquake in southern Chile being the largest recorded earthquake to date.
