A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck the southern coast of Peru on June 28, 2024, at 3:22 a.m. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for possible tsunami waves reaching heights of 1 to 3 meters in parts of Peru's coast. The earthquake's epicenter was west of Atiquipa in southern Peru, about 600 kilometers from the capital city of Lima. The area is known for being situated on the boundary of two geological plates, the South American Plate and the Nazca Plate.
